In the last couple of years I have developed what you might call an obsession with green smoothies. I am lost without my daily dose of this luscious, nutritious green liquid which so satisfies my taste buds and my body’s demands for minerals and nutrients. Once you start drinking green smoothies there is no turning back. A day without their deliciousness and feel-good factor is a lesser day. Green smoothies genuinely make me feel great, energising my mind and body and fulfilling my daily need for lots of fruit and vegetables in one fell swoop.
Apologies, enough with the obsessive eulogising. What precisely you might ask is a green smoothie and what is so good about it?
A green smoothie is a blended drink containing a leafy green such as kale, spinach or chard. The average green smoothie fanatic will have a preference for kale, one of the most nutrient dense foods in the world, but it is good to rotate different kinds to gain extra benefits. When consumed raw rather than cooked, even more of this goodness is available to the body. Blending it enables the body to easily take on board large quantities of kale or other greens without hours of arduous chewing. You might think ‘hang on a second Secret Shade that sounds disgusting’, and on its own it would indeed taste bitter and difficult to drink, but with some fruit added to sweeten things up it turns into a mouthwateringly delicious treat. It also serves as the perfect vehicle in which to add whatever ‘superfoods’ you feel so inclined towards, such as chia seeds, chlorella, camu camu or whatever it is. I start every day with one litre of the green elixir, when my stomach is empty and most ready to receive all of that goodness.
Some (there are lots more!) of the health giving benefits of the green smoothie are that it offers:
– Large amounts of vitamins, nutrients and minerals
– A great source of fibre, which aids the elimination of toxins from the body and keeps us regular
– A super healthy source of protein
– Chlorophyll, which is incredibly good for you
I’m no scientist so I’m not going to bore you with the details surrounding the interaction of all these things with our bodies. Basically it’s very good for you and just introducing a green smoothie into your existing diet without changing anything else will reap great rewards. The interested reader can of course look this stuff up online for all the juicy specifics. Let me just tell you that they make me feel great, taste awesome and make me crave lovely healthy food!
